The goal of pediatric occupational therapy is
- Children should be able to dress up their self without any assistance eg. wear shoes, comb etc. Sometimes children with disabilities need help from parents to perform basic self care tasks which are troublesome for parents
- To improve fine motor skills eg. that includes improving pen holding and writing skills that are absolutely necessary for better education of child. Fine motor skills are also necessary to maintain hygiene etc. eg. brushing teeth etc.
- It helps children to improve sensory skills, sensory skills are important for children eg. a child with weak sensory skills may have extreme reactions for minor triggers eg. a child might take a loud voice as threat and may behave strange as they are not able to understand level of threat. A child might refuse to eat food due to minor smell.
- A child might have low visual motor skills eg. they might have difficult co ordination between eyes and hands.
Children may need occupational therapy due to disability or autism. Sometimes disability is acquired due to injury and physiotherapists recommend occupational therapy due to prolonged recovery time. Usually these children often have physical disability and does not have challenges like sensory skills or fine motor skills.
However a large set of children with autism also have physical difficulty, they usually have challenges like difficulty in writing, walking difficulties etc. Weak sensory skills might impact child social life. Disability effect child quality of life. Goal of occupational therapy is make child self independent , so that they don’t need assistance to live regular life.
